On October 8, 1862, in Shibpur village of Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district, the famous musician of the subcontinent, Samrat Ustad Alauddin Khan was born into a family of musicians. His father Sabdar Hussain Khan aka Sadu Khan was also a prominent musician. Mother’s name is Sundari Begum. As a teenager, Ustad Alauddin Khan embarked on the pursuit of instrumental music after completing 7 years of sargaming under famous musician Gopalkrishna Bhattacharya from Calcutta. Basically, since then he started living in India. But her parents remained in Bangladesh.

About 150 years ago, Sur Samrat Alauddin Khan’s parents died. They were buried near their home in Shivpur. The graves of Ustad Alauddin Khan’s parents have been unprotected and neglected for the past 150 years. Photos of dogs sleeping there are also posted on social media. This caused a storm of criticism. Finally, after 150 years, the tombs of Alauddin Khan’s parents have been preserved on the initiative of the district administration and the upazila administration.

According to various books and local history sources, Ustad Alauddin Khan is a Bengali composer who was the first to introduce, promote and appreciate raga music from this western subcontinent. His music teacher was Rababi Ustad Kashim Ali Khan, the daughter of royal chamber musician Agartala Tansen. He introduced a new genre in music known as ‘Alauddin Gharana’ or ‘Maihar Gharana’. Making worthy disciples is one of his great achievements.

Ustad Alauddin Khan’s son Ustad Ali Akbar Khan became world famous due to his training. Awarded ‘Padma Bhushan’ and ‘Padma Vibhushan’ by the Government of India. His son-in-law, the sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar became world famous and received the “Padma Bhushan”, “Padma Vibhushan” and “Bharat Ratna” awards from the Government of India. On September 6, 1972, Ustad Alauddin Khan died in Maihar, Madhya Pradesh, India. His grave is there.

However, there are still tombs of his parents at Shivpur of Brahmanbaria. The grave has been overlooked and neglected. Along with their grave is the grave of a sister of Alauddin Khan. Nearly 150 years after their death, the tomb has been renovated and embellished. Shibpur Ustad Alauddin Khan College was built in his name. A mural retracing its history has been installed in this college.

Also, Ustad Alauddin Khan dug a pond with his own money and built a mosque on one bank. The mosque was also renovated on the initiative of the upazila administration.

Khurshid Alam Khan, the grandson of Alauddin Khan, oversaw the mosque. He said the graves of my grandfather’s parents had been unprotected and neglected for about 150 years. After renovation, the tomb will be very beautiful. I take care of the mosque, it too has been renovated

Local journalist Hedayet Ullah said, “Ustad Alauddin Khan’s many assets have been confiscated. I demand to evict them and build a compound.

Chairman of Sur Samrat Ustad Alauddin Khan Memorial Sangsad Rana Shamim Ratan said that the place had a tragic fate after the death of Ustad Alauddin Khan. The dedication of UNO Ekramul Siddiqui went into creating the mural and renovating the tomb. My request is to build a memorial complex here in his name. All of his belongings are stored in India. We want to bring these things back and create a museum.

Nabinagar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Ekramul Siddiqui said: I went to a function in Shivpur after I joined. From there I went to the house of Ustad Alauddin Khan. I went to see the graves of his parents lying in the pond. And the dog is sleeping. One of these photos has gone viral on Facebook. I then took the initiative to create murals and renovate the cemetery. We have many other plans. It will be implemented in phases.

Today is September 6. It is the 50th anniversary of the death of legendary raga music composer from the subcontinent, Samrat Ustad Alauddin Khan. He died on this day in 1972 in Maihar, Madhya Pradesh, India.

According to the story, he was born in Shibpur village of Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria in 1862. He was the 3rd child of musician Sabdar Hossain Khan alias Sadu Khan and Sundari Begum. Ustad Alauddin Khan was a famous eminent musician and Sarodbisharad. He was introduced to music as a child by his older brother Fakir (Tapas) Aftab Uddin Khan.

He ran away from home at the age of 10 and joined a traveling band to travel from village to village in search of music. At that time, he became familiar with songs like Jari-Sari, Baul, Bhatiali, Kirtan, Panchali etc. Later he went to Calcutta and accepted the discipleship of the famous holy musician Gopal Krishna Bhattacharya aka Nulo Gopal. I learned to play instruments like flute, piclu, sitar, madolin, banjo, etc. by musical director Amrit Lal Dutt aka Habu Dutt. He also studied violin in the western style of a Goanese conductor named Lobo Sahib and in the indigenous style of the eminent musician Amar Das. Additionally, Hazari learned mridanga and tabla from masters. Thus, he became a master of music.

After 1918, he settled permanently in India. The British government awarded him the title “Khan Saheb”. He was the teacher of many eminent musicians. He was the first Bengali to bring raga music from the subcontinent to the West. Alauddin Khan received India’s Sangeet Academy Award in 1952. Elected a Fellow of the Academy in 1954. ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 1958 and ‘Padma Vibhushan’ in 1971 and in 1961 he was awarded the Desi title ‘Kottam by Visva Bharati and Life Member of University of Delhi with the title of ‘Doctor of Laws’.

He taught for a time as a guest teacher at Shanti Niketan. Alauddin Khan died on September 6, 1972 at Medina Bhawan in Maihar, India.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the death of Ustad Alauddin Khan, a discussion meeting and a musical program were organized in Brahmanbaria on Tuesday evening September 6th. This program is organized by Sursamrat Di Alauddin Sangeetangaan. The Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, General Secretary of the District Awami League, Principal of Women’s College and Acting President of Brahmanbaria Press Club will attend.

Moreover, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of Ustad Alauddin Khan, the administration of Nabinagar Upazila held a prayer meeting and a memorial discussion meeting at his birthplace Shivpur.
