The last scene of ‘Athai’. The scene is dark. Desdemona is lying in her last bed on stage. Her boyfriend Athai is dying by cutting off his head. And when it gets dark, a man, wearing a mask, walks around making a strange noise. Hearing that sound sent shivers down my spine. The Iago-looking man circles the room and stands on the stage. He is the emperor in the canal world. It was then that the Iago-rupi Anirban Bhattacharya showed that he was a long-running horse.

Then the day passed. Anirban left the stage and came to the big screen, fulfilling the predictions of many. And climbed the shelves playing Khurdhar. His “Shajahan Regency” to “Golondaaz”, “Vinchida” to “Gumnami” – consecutive hits. And this year, he is the new and greatest discovery as a director in Tollywood. His directorial debut ‘Ballabhpurer Rupkatha’ was released in October. This film is still showing in multiplex channels like Inox, three months later. Along with directing, Anirban also continues to perform. Just like Kaushik Gangopadhyay. This means that Tollywood got a qualified actor as well as a director at the same time.

Arindam Sheel, the director of “Eye of the Eagle”, the movie that made its big screen debut, brought him to Tollywood. What did Anirban choose? ”I like to look people in the eye. I can tell if those eyes are real or not, passionate or not. How much his love and responsibility to work. With Anirvan, I did ‘Eagle Eye’ and ‘Dhananjay’ – two polar opposite characters. I saw Anirvan for the first time in “Arashinagar” by Aparna Sen. He was nothing then. But every time he appeared on screen, I noticed his presence on screen. Then I talk to her. And I understood that it would be done. It took a month to convince my producer. But I didn’t take the picture for a month. There was only one reason – I was firm in my decision. This producer was Srikant Mohta. Srikanth was furious with me. But even after a month I said that I would not do without Anirban. The first is that I am a fanatic. Once it gets into your head, it becomes very difficult to get out. If I think someone wants the same thing, I want the same thing. And elsewhere, I think the true nature of people, the will to act… they come out doing my stories. I don’t need to look at clippings or audition like that. And I do the casting entirely on merit. There is no point in pleasing me separately. My actors and actresses know this very well.

If I want to cast someone, I’ll find them wherever they are. And all it takes is faith. “When it’s ready, I know I can work with it,” Arindam says.

And what do you say Anirban? Hearing the comparison with Kaushik, he said, “Kaushik is a very experienced director. He did television before doing cinema. Compared to that, I’m more of an accidental director. I never thought I would go into management. In OTT I wrote the script for R Prateek ‘Mandar’. But there was no desire to manage. Mani-da (co-director of SVF Mahendra Soni) insisted. Then when ‘Mandar’ became a hit, I was asked to direct a film.

But Anirban likes to see himself above all as an actor. “Acting is my job,” he said. However, he still doesn’t want to compare himself to Kaushik Gangopadhyay. “It’s uncomfortable to draw comparisons with Kaushikdar or Srijit after just two works,” he says.

And the multiplex that is still running, what does the chef say about it? In the words of Amitabh Guha Thakurta, Provincial Director of INOX, “This outing of Durga Puja is still going on, even this winter. This month of December still continues after the release of three big movies. This shows the merit of the film. Our business around this film has been very good. But the public has the last word. The film is running because the public loves it.

An image on a single screen too. Navina Chowkhani, the director of Navina, says: “We continued the film three weeks after its release. Continued for six weeks. This gave us seven lakh cases. One of the best Bengali films of this year is “The Tale of Ballabpur”. The script, the acting, the dialogues of the film – all successful. In fact, those who watch the movie with money gave this diagnosis. This success did not come from sitting at home and watching movies on OTT”.
