Case against 17 people including the ED of Barendra

A complaint was filed against Rajshahi’s correspondent Bulbul Habib and cameraman Rubel Islam of the private television channel ATN News during a live broadcast.

On Monday night, victimized journalist Bulbul Habib filed the case at Rajpara police station in the metropolis of Rajshahi.

In this case, seven officials and employees of the Varendra Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) have been named and 10 others have been named as defendants. The main defendant in this case is the Executive Director (ED) of the BMDA, Abdur Rashid. The other defendants are – Storekeeper (temporary layoff) Md. Life, office peon md. Salim, personal assistant of ED Nurul Islam, member of Ansar. Enamul and driver Abdus Sabur (temporary suspension).

Rajpara Police Station, OC Jahangir Alam, confirmed that the case had been registered. He said the case was filed by Bulbul Habib for beating with intent to kill, vandalizing cameras and microphones and extorting money. Measures will be taken after investigation. In addition, efforts will be made to arrest the accused.

Earlier Monday morning, journalist Bulbul Habib and cameraman Rubel Islam were attacked in Barendra Bhavan. ATN News was broadcasting live reports that BMDA officials would not report to the office at 8 a.m., as per government instructions.

Abdur Rashid, Executive Director of BMDA, came to the office around 8:20 a.m. during the live broadcast. He behaved badly with journalists. After that, on his orders, employees started beating Bulbul Habib and Rubel while he was live. They were dragged out of Varendra Bhavan to the main road after being beaten. The cameras and poles were taken and dismantled. The camera was destroyed and the live broadcast stopped at some point.

Later, two journalists went to Rajshahi Medical College (RAMEK) hospital for treatment. One of cameraman Rubel’s ears was badly damaged by the beatings. Journalists working in Rajshahi came to Barendra Bhavan to protest the incident. They demanded the dismissal of responsible officers and employees.

At noon, BMDA chairman Begum Akhtar Jahan told reporters that the head office storekeeper. Jiban was immediately transferred to Chapainawabganj area and driver Abdus Sabur to Naogaon area. However, journalists expressed their dissatisfaction with this transfer order. They informed that the movement will continue until the convicts are suspended.

Eventually, the BMDA was forced to accept this request. Later, BMDA secretary Sharif Ahmed in an order from the office. Jiban and driver Abdus Sabur suspended. Among them is the general secretary of the union of employees of Jeevan BMDA.

Calling the incident “undesirable”, BMDA chairwoman Begum Akhtar Jahan told reporters that she saw the video footage after the incident. As a result, both have been temporarily suspended. A commission of inquiry is being formed into this incident. Punitive measures will also be taken against those found guilty in the investigation report.

Asked about not taking action against executive director Abdur Rashid, the BMDA chairman said he could not take direct action against the executive director. The investigation report will be communicated to the Ministry after receipt of the report. The ministry will take action.
