Mir Afsar Ali: Sharp observation was Raju Srivastava’s greatest tool. How many people he imitated, that we don’t really know. I know their style.

The late comedian Raju Srivastava. As soon as the news came, Mir Afsar Ali posted on social media, writing that Ishwar was upset, he wanted to laugh, so he called Raju Bhai. The meeting with Raju Srivastava is still fresh in Mir’s memory. Sometimes in ‘Miracle’, sometimes in the phase of getting to know each other from the first interview. Getting closer to Raju Srivastava, the man who was looking for Mir in ‘Mirakkel’ – Today, grief-stricken Mir told TV9 Bangla how much the image of Raju Srivastava was in his eyes…

Raju bhai’s first conversation with me dates back to 2004. When I became a candidate for the Great India Laughter Challenge. I was the only competitor from East India. At that time, we were staying in a hotel in Andheri. I also remember the name of the hotel, all the competitors of the chain were grouped there. I was surprised to think he was my co-competitor. At this time, he has 18 to 20 years of experience, he also worked on the big screen at this time. I mean, he did stand-up comedy for 18 to 20 years. But he used to do stage shows even before that, in the format I then got used to seeing him – on TV or whatever. The neighborhood shows, the club shows, did everything, worked a lot. He was almost a celebrity candidate back then. Because all the Bollywood celebrities who came to the “Great India Laughter Challenge” at different times, they all knew Raju Srivastava. Following this meeting with me, when he didn’t let anyone feel that you are an anonymous person. Nobody knows you. He never let himself feel it.

I spoke to this man in 2004, from there to 2010. My own show ‘Miracle’. In season 5, he appeared in the grand finale. He was very happy. He said, “The Mir that I saw in 2004, started ‘Mirakkel’ exactly 2 years later in 2006. Then again after 4 years, in 2010 I became a guest judge on one of the seasons of his show. Well sure at Chanel’s invitation… But I was looking for this man, who sat quietly in front of me in 2004.”

We used to chat in the house about the ‘Great India Laughter Challenge’. I was generally calm, a silent observer. Sunil Pal, Navin Prabhakar, Raju Srivastava… They were joking among themselves, I used to watch silently from the sideline. These memories will remain, they were always special. He was very happy. Back to ‘Miracle’, it was a great pride for him. As he used to say while speaking, it was indeed a matter of pride for him to have come to Mirakkele. And only for us. We were all very happy, maybe no other Bollywood celebrity would have been so happy. A comedy show, its finale, star actors will appear.

Sharp observation was Raju Srivastava’s greatest tool. How many people he imitated, that we don’t really know. I know their style. For example, Raju Srivastava shows how an old man in the village should speak. Such wraps can be seen in the village. I know you by name or you don’t know me by name. Raju Srivastava named these characters one by one. And what we mean by popular comedy, we got it from the work of Raju Srivastava. We’ve seen a lot of comedians in movies. I can’t finish with the names. But the comedy that I saw in the film is mixed with the screenwriter’s dialogues with their own talent. People like Raju Srivastava would go there, it was impromptu. Thinking about something at the time, reacting immediately to a situation, etc.

Now those who do stand-up comedy, like Kapil Sharma, so big names, their own shows, everyone’s hands except Raju Srivastava’s hand. So we are grateful, as long as we earn the fruits of hard work, we will thank this man. Raju Srivastava can put on a show on his own. Those who have worked with him will say it in one sentence. He is there mane mehefil mein jaan… He just mingled with everyone like that. He kept everyone very tight.
