Another person without whom this list would be incomplete is Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee Lewis, the legendary musical personality who pioneered “rock n roll”, has died. He was 87 at the time of his death. Lewis was a pianist, singer and songwriter. He is considered one of the most influential pianists of the 20th century. Lewis died at his home in Desoto County, Mississippi, south of Memphis, according to a statement. His seventh wife was by his side when he died. He told his wife in her last days that he welcomed the afterlife and was not afraid of death. Lewis’ songs and energetic performances, including “Great Ball of Fire”, ushered in the “rock and roll” era of influential American pop music in the 1950s. He was born in 1935 in Louisiana. The son of a poor farming family, Lewis had to mortgage their home to buy his first piano. He was expelled for doing a boogie-woogie version of “My God Is Real” while studying at school. He then did not resume his studies and concentrated on music. He made his first performance at the opening of a car dealership business, when he was only 14 years old. He was one of the first artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Among his three biggest hits, “Great Balls of Fire” reached number 2 on the US charts and became an iconic song of the era of rock and roll. Lewis has recorded 40 studio albums, the most recent being 2014’s ‘Rock and Roll Time’. His previous album ‘Mean Old Man’ reached the US Top 30 when it was released in 2010. The star sang a duet with Mick Jagger , Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson and co.
