Mass BNP rally started in Rajshahi
The BNP departmental mass meeting in Rajshahi began with the recitation of the Quran at 10.30am.
Although permission was granted from 2 p.m., the police relinquished control of the land around 6 a.m. After that, activists started entering the field with small processions. In the morning, the adviser to the president of the BNP, Mizanur Rahman Minu, took the stage.
At that time, Mizanur Rahman Minu as well as organizing secretary Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu and local leaders were present on stage.
Earlier at 9:30 a.m., the Nationalist Cultural and Social Organization (Jasas) performed the national anthem. After that, they continued to perform various songs including “Perthom Bangladesh Amar”.
Two symbolic chairs with pictures of BNP Chairman Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarek Rahman were placed on the stage along with other chairs.
Leaders said many could not come due to obstacles and harassment. Even then, the gathering will turn into a sea of people. They complain that the internet has been cut off. Broadband internet was down, that too was cut off.
About 150 microphones were installed in an area of about one and a half kilometers around the gathering place.
Tofazzal Hossain Tapu, the organizer of the media sub-committee for the preparation of the rally, said the central leaders of Jasas came from Dhaka. Apart from this, Jasas artists from different quarters of the division have joined the program.
Leaders and activists who came to the rally said that even after Awami League leaders and activists were threatened and blocked, standing on the road with sticks and getting out of vehicles, they gathered instead of mass rally of Rajshahi. As the day progresses, the gathering place becomes crowded. The whole neighborhood came alive with slogans and processions.
Helal Hossain Real, Secretary General of Rajshahi’s Bagha Upazila BNP Moneygram Syndicate, who visited the rally site, said that about 1,200 people came from our union. We came to the gathering by trawler across the Padma River due to the police checkpoint at every turn. Still, there are obstacles in the way.
Sajdar Hossain, President of Dayarampur Union BNP of Bagatipara Upazila of Natore said that about 450 people came from our union. I got off the train at night and was next to the station. I’m here for the morning assembly. The activists are happy to be able to attend the rally despite many obstacles.
This mass rally is being held in Rajshahi as part of the BNP’s central program to protest against the demands of the caretaker government during the elections, the increase in the price of fuel and basic commodities. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will be the main guest at the rally.
Rajshahi City Additional Police Commissioner Vijay Bashak said the rally was supposed to start at 2 p.m. but it started at 9.30 a.m. About 1,500 police are deployed at the rally site. They work to maintain law and order.
