“Ponniyan Selvan” overtakes “Brahmastra” to set new revenue record

Entertainment desk: After winning the crown of Tamil Nadu’s highest-grossing film in India, this time, “Ponniyan Selvan” also set a record in terms of worldwide earnings. Veteran director Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyan Selvan’ became the third highest-grossing Indian film of the year worldwide, overtaking ‘Brahmastra’ and ‘Vikram’.

“Ponniyan Selvan” is a historical epic based on the 1954 Tamil novel by Kalki. The film stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan and Aishwarya Lakshmi.

As of September 17, the film has grossed Rs 455 crore worldwide, including Rs 161 crore ($20 million) overseas alone, according to trade sources. Ayan Mukherjee’s ‘Brahmastra’ earned Rs 431 crore worldwide and Kamal Haasan-starring Vikram earned Rs 443 crore. Meanwhile, 18 days after its release, the film is still in demand and trade analysts predict it will hit the 5 billion mark.

This year, two hit films from the South shook the world. SS Rajamouli’s sensational historical action film ‘RRR’ broke all records by collecting 1112 crores globally and Kannada film ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ collected 1207 crores globally. But it’s safe to say that ‘Ponnian Selvan’ won’t reach that number.
The film was a huge box office hit as well as a favorite with audiences and critics alike and now holds its spot as the second highest grossing Tamil film of all time. Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar’s 2.0 topped the list earning 700 crores.

The creators announced that the sequel to “Ponniyan Selvan” will be released next year.
