Transgender mogul buys out Miss Universe organization
Thai media mogul Ann Jakapong Jakrajutatip has bought the Miss Universe Organization, the company that has hosted the Miss Universe pageant for seven decades, for $20 million.
This transformational woman runs a limited company named JKN Global Group. His company produces and airs a variety of television shows.
Zakrajutatip has previously been seen participating in the Thai version of the popular American reality TV show “Project Runway” and “Shark Tank”.
The Miss Universe organization was once owned by former US President Donald Trump. With the company now in the hands of Zakrajutatip, the requirements for entering the contest are also going to be varied, the BBC reported.
Jakrajutatip has always been known to be outspoken about her experiences as a transgender woman.
In a statement, she described the Miss Universe organization as a “powerful and strategic” addition to her business.
“Our aim is not only to give a platform to enthusiastic representatives from different backgrounds and cultures, keeping the tradition of this event; Rather, we want to develop this brand for the next generation.
“Our relationships with other global brands and partners are at their strongest right now,” Miss Universe Organization CEO Amy Emmerich and Paula Shugart said in a statement. Our progressive approach has put us at the forefront of the industry.
From 1996 to 2015, former US President Donald Trump had a share in the ownership of this company. Two TV stations decided not to air the contest after one of Trump’s comments about illegal immigrants during the 2016 election campaign.
Trump called a former Miss Universe “Miss Piggy.” Additionally, Trump, who was heavily criticized for various offensive comments about women, later left the property.
The BBC reports that the competition is about to change dramatically now that Zakrajutatip has taken control of the company.
The organizers have indicated that from next year, married women and mothers will also be able to participate in this competition. Until then, only single and childless women could compete.
This competition, which has been going on for 71 years, is broadcast in more than 160 countries around the world.
