Trawler sinks in Sundarbans, two fishermen missing

Two fishermen went missing after their trawler sank in the Baleshwar River in the Sundarban region, 30 km southwest of Patharghata in Barguna.

The incident happened in the Lachi area of ​​Pakkidiya on Thursday, January 5 at around 1:30 a.m.

Lt. Shafayet Abrar, Commanding Officer of Coastguard Station South Patharghata, confirmed this to Jago News on Friday, January 6 at around 6 p.m.

The missing fishermen are Yusuf Bepari (23) son of Abdur Rahim Bepari and Bayjid (17) son of Amin Bepari from ward number 6 of Padma village of Union Sadar of Patharghata upazila.

According to family sources, after dinner on Tuesday January 3, Yusuf and Bayazid left their home for four days of sadai bazaar in a small trawler to fish in the Baleshwar River in the Sundarbans region. Around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Bayzid called and asked for help to rescue him. He said our trawler sank. We both float on a cockpit. Since then, the mobile used by them has been switched off. Immediately after the incident, Yusuf’s uncle, Abdul Latif, and local residents came out to rescue at night.

Commander of Coastguard Station South Patharghata Lt. Shafayet Abrar said Mongla Station, Kachukhali was informed as soon as news of the disappearance came to light. Members of the Coast Guard’s West Zone conduct salvage operations with the vessel.

Kachukhali Coastguard Station sources said the semi-submerged trawler, net, rope and cockpit were recovered around 2 p.m. Friday. But the missing Yusuf and Bayazid have not been found. The rescue operation is currently suspended due to darkness and fog, but will resume on Saturday January 7 morning.
